Many common products that we use in our daily lives contain potentially hazardous materials and require special care when disposing of them. It is illegal to dispose of hazardous waste in the garbage, down storm drains, or onto the ground. Regulations to protect public health and the environment have been changing. This is because we now know that some common items that have traditionally been thrown in your household’s or small business’ trash cannot be safely disposed of in landfills. These common items are referred to as hazardous waste, and some of them as “universal waste” (u-waste).

Do not throw electronic devices in the trash!

The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has tested many electronic devices, including tube-type and flat panel televisions and computer monitors, laptop computers, computers central processing units (CPU), printers, radios, microwave ovens, video cassette recorders (VCR), cell phones, cordless phones, and telephone answering machines.

The devices that DTSC tested contained concentrations of metals (lead and copper) high enough to make them hazardous waste when they are discarded. 

KMPUD does not accept hazardous waste disposal at the dumpster pad.  Dumpsters in this location are for the disposal of non-hazardous household trash only.  For hazardous waste disposal, or to arrange for a construction dumpster, please contact Republic Services.

You still have time to bring your branches and limbs down to the green waste container! But you have to be quick! Thanks to the Firewise Community and Alpine County, KMPUD was granted additional funds to bring back the green waste container for a limited time.

The container is located on the north side of the dumpster pad, on Loop Road and will only be available until it is full.

KMPUD offers this service annually at no charge to Kirkwood residents, but funds are limited.

This year, we were granted additional funds through Alpine County to continue providing this service for a limited time. Once the bin is full, it will be removed.

This container is intended to assist Kirkwood residents in disposal of green waste defensible space-type debris only. Examples are pine needles, small tree limbs, shrubs, bushes, and willows.

Please follow the instructions posted on the bin.

This container is NOT intended for tree trunks, stumps, non-vegetation items, dirt, rock, lumber, or trash.

 

Memorial Day often marks the beginning of Summer just as Labor Day signals its end. As KMPUD prepares for Fall and Winter, a few annual tasks take place to prepare us for colder weather. Learn more about what KMPUD does to prepare and how it will affect you.

One of the annual tasks is removing the playground equipment for winter storage. This work typically takes place in September or October, depending on weather, to protect the integrity of the equipment so that it is suitable for many years of use.

Did you know there is a permanent cornhole court in Kirkwood?

Unlike the playground equipment, the cornhole court is made to survive winter conditions and remains up all year. Just bring your own bean bags!

Take a walk along the West Meadow Trail near the KMPUD offices and soon you'll find it. The site includes a garbage container and three picnic tables so you can enjoy lunch with family and friends. 

As we transition into fall and winter, KMPUD will shut off irrigation water meters. 

Each year, irrigation meters are activated around June and remain on for four months before being switched off to protect against cold weather. If your property has irrigation service, remember that the system will be turned off for the season in October. 

Irrigation will remain off until June 2027. 

In the winter months, KMPUD does not allow new construction or breaking ground.

Please finish or close your projects by October 15th.

Fire Hydrant Meter Services are terminated, and meters are removed for the winter season.

All meters will be removed by October 30th.

Got a Chimney?

Before you use it again this winter, get it cleaned! 

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends a yearly check and cleaning before cold weather arrives. 

As a homeowner, you should perform interior and exterior visual checks regularly. After severe storms, earthquakes, or any suspected chimney fire call for a professional level inspection.

The District is moving forward with its Fire Chief recruitment. To ensure continuity during the hiring process, the Board has approved  a six-month agreement with Alpine County for temporary Fire Chief services.

The Board also bid a warm farewell to General Manager and KVFD Fire Chief Rick Ansel at the September meeting and wishes him the very best in his retirement.
