Saturday, July 3, 2021 at 5:00pm.

The annual Kirkwood Summer Festival is the signature fundraising event for the Kirkwood Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD). We hoped to be back on the Plaza this summer for BBQ, wine and beer tasting, and live music but unfortunately that is not possible. However, we can still be together as a community, virtually, and show our support for our all-volunteer fire department during the KirkwoodVirtualSummerFestivalwhich will be held on Saturday, July 3rd at 5:00pm. Click HERE for more information.

Much like last year's Virtual Summer Festival, the KirkwoodVirtualSummerFestivalwill feature a fun video celebrating our fearless first responders. This year, we would like to add one important element: YOU! Here are two ways that you, your friends, and family can be part of the video:

Kirkwood Kids Art Show: Kids, create a work of art for the volunteer firefighters. Send a picture of your masterpiece to Jessica at jgillies@kmpud.com

Shout Out: Record a 3-6 second video of yourself, friends, and family shouting "Thank You KVFD Firefighters!" or "We love you!". Send the video to Jessica at jgillies@kmpud.com

Our fundraising goal this year is to raise $100,000 towards the purchase of a new Type 1 fire engine. Type 1 engines are equipped with high-capacity pumps, and carry a variety of hoses, tall ladders, and other essential equipment needed during emergencies. KVFD currently has two Type 1 engines that are 35 and 15 years old. It is time to start fundraising to purchase a replacement for the 35-year-old engine.

The men and women of KVFD are the only emergency responders in Kirkwood and as an isolated community we rely on them to help keep us safe. Here's how you can help support KVFD and keep Kirkwood safe and protected:

Make A Cash Donation: Click HERE Please consider making a cash donation to help KVFD buy a new Type 1 fire engine. The price tag is $650,000 for just the engine and does not include the equipment that goes onboard. Our goal is to raise $100,000 this year, knowing it will take six years or more to raise all the money needed.

Donate A Silent Auction Item: Handmade crafts, Kirkwood art, outdoor clothing and gear, wine, gift cards, etc. will be graciously accepted and appreciated. If you would like to donate an item, click HERE

Bid on Items in the Online Silent Auction: The Silent Auction will be up and running from June 21st through July 3rd. Stay tuned for more information.

Thanks to Kirkwood Kid, Hazel Benson for sending in her masterpiece, pictured below!

If you have questions or want more information, email Jessica at jgillies@kmpud.com or call the office at (209) 258-4444.

Invasive Weeds in Kirkwood

The snow is melting and Kirkwood will soon be covered in beautiful native wildflowers and an abundance of non-native, invasive weeds. The most prevalent weed in Kirkwood is Sweet Clover (pictured below). Sweet Clover invades native grasslands by overtopping and shading native sun-loving plants, and grows abundantly on disturbed lands, roadsides and fields.  If you find Sweet Clover growing on your property, remove it before it goes to seed. Pulling these hearty plants by their roots is laborious and is most easily accomplished in the Spring and early Summer, not when they're in full flower or seeding in the Fall. An alternative to pulling the weeds up by there roots is to cut them before the flowers emerge.

Winter Update

The District's Snow Removal season ends on May 15, 2021 after a mild winter with just 222 inches of snowfall measured to-date and no more significant storms on the horizon. The District measures snow at the Community Service Building located on Loop Road at approximately 7800 feet in elevation.  The graph below shows the seasonal snowfall comparison from the 2010-2011 through 2020-2021 winter seasons.
