Mosquito Abatement

The Kirkwood Meadows Public Utility District has a complete and integrated pest management plan to mitigate the impact of West Nile Virus in Alpine, Amador and El Dorado Counties.   As part of a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Public Health’s Vector Control Division, KMPUD is authorized to apply an ecologically sensitive larvicide to sites containing standing water when mosquito larvae are observed.  District staff are required to obtain and maintain licensing through CDPH’s Vector Control Division and are also required to undergo continuing education.  While there are over 80 species of mosquitoes known to exist in the state of California, only 5 have been observed in the Kirkwood community, none of which are vectors for the West Nile Virus or other diseases.  Mosquito abatement efforts in Kirkwood take place in a relatively short period of time as standing water typically disappears early in the summer months.
